Paper Bag to Pom Pom

Hey guys!  Thanksgiving weekend sure did fly by!  My family and I spent our holiday weekend in Nashville Tennessee, like we've done the past several years.  We did lots of shopping and had so much fun, I was not ready to head back to the "real world" on Monday!

Remember our very first post, our Thanksgiving Mantle?  Well, I told you I'd be back to tell you a little more about the brown pom poms on the "Give Thanks" bunting, so here I am!  These adorable little accents are made from PAPER BAGS!!!  Can you believe it!?!?

When I put together the bunting and placed it on my mantle, I knew it was missing something.  These simple little pom poms brought it all together! And even better, I had the supplies left over from our Drive-In Movie Party!

Here's the step by step instructions on how I made my Paper Bag Pom Poms...

You are basically just cutting the bottom off of the bag and you should be left with this....

Stack your two pieces on top of one another and cut right down the middle again.

Then you're left with 4 pieces...

Helpful hints:  Pull slowly.  The bag will rip if you aren't gentle!  Also, make sure you pull apart your pieces towards the knotted portion on top AND on bottom.  You will probably have to play with each piece until you have the exact look you are going for!

That's it!  Now you should have your very own Paper Bag Pom Pom!!!  Pretty simple right!?  I think these would look ADORABLE strung as garland on a Christmas Tree....I'm thinking that's where I will be seeing these next!

Thanks so much for stopping by!  Hope you have a great week!

Our Drive-In Movie Party

When was the last time you went to a drive-in movie!?!?  Do you even know of any still up and running?  I remember as a kid going with my family to one a few towns over and we always had so much fun!  I can’t imagine our kids not even knowing what one is! (wow! - I feel sound old!)  Charlie and I decided to take matters into our own hands and create a drive-in theatre in our backyard!  By the end of the night we were already talking about when we could do it again!  We rented a projector and screen from a local company and set it up right on our patio.  It was only about $90 to rent.  We asked everyone attending to pay $10 per family and this helped cover the expense.  Plus, who can take their family for a fun night out and spend less than $50 these days!?!?  Everyone backed their trucks in, filled their truck bed with lawn chairs and sleeping bags and we had our very own Drive-In Movie!  The kids loved it and so did us parents!  We watched The Lorax and Happy Feet 2!

We even had our very own concession stand!
Caramel Corn, Butter Popcorn and White Chocolate Popcorn!

And of course, there was a candy bar...

We created all of our own food tags and concessions sign!

We had such a blast and it was a great way to spend time with family and friends!  Have you ever thrown an outdoor movie party or created your own Drive-In?

We can't wait to do it again!

Until then, here's some FREE printables for you so you can have your very own Drive-In!

Our Thanksgiving Mantle

Hello blogland! This is our official first post and we couldn't be more excited.  We've been trying to setup this little site for several months now! Trying to decide what, how and when to do the first post has been the most nerve wracking part! Agghhhh!  So here goes nothing...

Is it really already the middle of November!?!?  This year has flown by.  I feel like I'm decorating for a new holiday or season every other week! Anyone with me!?

So, our first post is showcasing our Thanksgiving and Fall inspired mantle.  Our lovely mantle has a beautiful little story of it's own.  In May of 2009, Southern Illinois was hit with a HUGE storm.  They actually classified it as an Inland Hurricane!  During the storm, an old piece of wood from a local saw mill washed up in our creek behind the house.  We didn't think anything of it.  It was among many of other things that washed up.  Then last year, I came home from work one night and found it drying out in our garage!!!  Charlie had a BRILLIANT idea to make this wash-up a mantle!  It's become my favorite part of our living room and definitely the focal point.

So, here is our Thanksgiving and Fall inspired mantle!

There are so many beautiful mantles and fall projects on Pinterest and they provided a lot of inspiration for all the pieces on ours.  One thing about our mantle is that we are NOT lacking space.  It's obviously quite long, which is what I love about it.

We started with a simple white candle in a large vase with berry garland wrapped around it.  A few large mason jars filled with sand wrapped with jute ribbon and an antique key.  Of course a lot of pumpkins!  Some dried naturals in mason jars.  And an old window with our DIY wreath on the front.  The wreath inspiration came from my friend Tonya, at Love of Family and Home.  You can check out her tutorial HERE.

I also knew I wanted to add some sort of bunting on the bottom, but couldn't find a printable online that I fell in love with and that matched our colors.  So, what else is a girl to do but make her own?  And, what kind of person would I be if I didn't share!?  Here ya go! Print away! We'll also come back later this week for a quick tutorial on those pom pom flowers you see on the bunting!

So there it is! What do you think???  We are quite happy with it.  I am not happy that I've had this up for what seems like 3 minutes and it's almost time to re-do it for Christmas!!!  Where is the time going!?!?

That's it for today.  Check back soon and we'll show you which space in our house just got stripes!

Have a great week and thanks for stopping by!
